CBNA Students Receive National Recognition in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Program

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is pleased to announce that senior Julie Souryavong from Northwood and freshman Brian Downer of Strafford were recognized in the 93rd annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.  Julie received a silver medal for her photograph entitled Paper Adventures: A Self-Portrait. This portrait was constructed by first capturing a beautiful sunset over a Goose Pond.  She then constructed paper boats and paper cranes.  Photographing each of these from the same perspective as the original sunset.  Finally she photographed herself in a confident pose and pull all the images seamlessly into one photograph.

Brian also received a silver medal for his essay entitled #PeaceforParis: Notes on the Realization of Personal Hypocrisy, which begins “If you have ever been afraid of yourself, perhaps you will understand. Not necessarily in a physical sense, not in the way that you’re afraid of beating yourself up, but in a different way. When you’re afraid of your own hypocrisy, afraid of your own prejudices, unsure of your own moral standings. You tell yourself you feel one way, and yet, with an increasing sense of dread, you notice yourself acting the other way on a daily basis…”

Three Hundred twenty thousand submissions from the across the country were received this year and just 2400 were recognized nationally.  Receiving silver medals in the competition places these talented students in the top one percent of all submissions nationally. Julie and Brian join the ranks of many notable artists and writers from this past century including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Joyce Carol Oates, Sylvia Plath, Paul Newman, Robert Redford and the renowned filmmaker Ken Burns who will receive the program’s Alumni Achievement Award this year, as well many, many other famous talented writers and artists. Congratulations to Julie and Brian for this national honor.

 

Coe- Brown Students Recognized for 2016 Scholastic Writing Awards

A number of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy students were recently recognized by the National Writing Project in New Hampshire through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. This is a remarkable achievement and milestone for young writers at CBNA who were mentored by English department faculty.  A panel of writers, teachers, and literary professionals selected these students’ work as being among the best works submitted by New Hampshire teenagers. Students are judged against other entries in the following categories: fiction, flash fiction, poetry, personal memoirs, persuasive essays, humor, science fiction and fantasy.  Of the more than 300 submissions to The Scholastic Writing Awards which New Hampshire students sent this year, the following students from CBNA were honored:

On May 9, 2016, all award recipients, including those whose work was selected as honorable mention, will be invited to attend the NH regional awards ceremony to be held at Heritage Commons on the campus of Plymouth State University. In addition, every piece of writing which received a gold or silver key will be published in this year’s edition of Middle/High School Voices.  Congratulations to this next generation of writers.

CBNA to Offer College Credit for Entrepreneurship

Dr. JoAnn Zylak, a faculty member at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, has successfully completed the BizInnovator Teacher Certification and is now able to offer high school juniors and seniors University of Iowa college credit for completing the Entrepreneurship course, which can be transferred to other secondary educational institutions as necessary.

Developed by the Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship at the University of Iowa, BizInnovator is a comprehensive online entrepreneurship curriculum that enables educators to teach the entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and problem solving—and also to prepare students for success in their chosen career path.

This program is a key element in our initiative to promote Entrepreneurship to students at the local, state and national level. The University of Iowa tuition fee (over $1,000 value) has been waived and students simply pay a course fee of $150. The program is ideal for students who have a passion to pave new paths, create new things or solve problems. The Entrepreneurship course and Innovation software provides students with a framework to apply these interests to the world of business.

Local economies depend on an ongoing creation of successful new businesses. BizInnovator is a proven curriculum to provide our youth and young adults with the knowledge and confidence to be innovators for our community.

Another top priority is to boost student interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) will grow 17 percent by 2018—nearly double the growth for non-STEM fields. By 2018, the U.S. will have more than 1.2 million unfilled STEM jobs because there will not be enough qualified workers to fill them. STEM is where jobs are today and where the job growth will be in the future.

BizInnovator compliments the STEM initiative, giving students the know-how to take achievements in STEM to market.

CBNA Students Earning College Credits

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy has established a partnership with Southern New Hampshire University through SNHU in the High School, a dual enrollment program allowing high school students to have the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school. Designated courses at CBNA have been aligned to meet the same content, rigor and learning outcomes as that of the University. The courses are taught by our high school teachers who have met SNHU adjunct faculty requirements and have been approved by the University. Presently, CBNA has four teachers, Walter Damon, Amy Usinger, Mark Struthers and David Zink-Mailloux, who are offering Calculus, Public Speaking, Creative Writing, Anatomy and Physiology, and Environmental Science through this program. More teachers and courses are in the approval process.

In addition, Dr. JoAnn Zylak has completed the BizInnovator Teacher Certification and is now able to offer juniors and seniors college credit for Entrepreneurship through the University of Iowa. BizInnovator is a comprehensive online entrepreneurship curriculum that enables educators to teach the entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and problem solving in preparing students for success in their chosen career paths.

CBNA is also in the process of allowing students to earn dual credit for classes through Great Bay Community College.

The advantage for students participating in these classes is that they are able to earn early college credit at a savings of more than 90% off regular college tuition. They also experience the academic requirements of university level courses, and establish official college transcripts that can be recognized and accepted by many other colleges and universities.
