CBNA Chapter of FBLA Holds Induction Ceremony

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) hosted its induction and officer installation ceremony at CBNA on November 4, 2015. Led by FBLA advisor Dr. JoAnn Zylak, FBLA Officers welcomed guests and gave presentations regarding the Mission, Goals, Code of Ethics and History of FBLA. There was also information given about the CONNECT with FBLA project in which chapters are challenged to obtain sponsorships for their individual chapter activities. Members who were inducted or installed are as follows: President – Brittany Guilmette (senior); Vice-President – Meghan Percy (senior); Secretary- Nate Schroeder (sophomore); Event Coordinator – Derek Meyer (junior); Treasurer – Abigail Dupuis (junior); Historian – Ambar Mercedes (senior); Parliamentarian – Nicole Beaupre (senior); Reporters senior Kristina Mitchell and junior Caitlin Pitre as well as members at large seniors Megan Elwell, Brendan Fallon, Tayla George, Jared Nelson; juniors Summer Barnes, Steven Chase, Maddie Cillo, Emily Ketchum, Donald MacCallum, Chelsea McCallion, Mikayla Prina and Abby Zollman ; sophomore Amaya Newport and freshman Aiden Ahern. Refreshments were served. Congratulations to CBNA’s Future Business Leaders on their new members and on their enthusiasm for FBLA’s mission “to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.”

CBNA Science Club Has Successful Balloon Launch

CBNA science students prepare the payload for their recent successful balloon launch.

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Science Club, working in conjunction with the University of New Hampshire Project SMART summer program, the Project SMART outreach program (CBNA, Londonderry High School and Timberlane High School) and Dr. Tony Phillips’ Earth to Sky Calculus program based in California had successful balloon launches on Saturday, November 23, 2015. The East Coast Project Smart and the Earth to Sky Calculus program have developed a cooperative venture to launch balloons simultaneously from the West and East coasts carrying payloads to measure difference in the radiation levels at the edge of the atmosphere between East and West. East Coast students and their advisors launched two balloons near New London, NH starting with the first release at 10:37 am on Saturday, November 23. The flights lasted about two hours reaching 102,000 feet – the edge of space.  CBNA’s team recovered the California team’s payload near Steep Falls, Maine on Saturday afternoon. CBNA also recovered its payload near Freeport, Maine on the afternoon of Sunday, November 24, caught high in a tree, making recovery difficult. The chase for recovery involved over 500 miles of driving throughout the weekend. This novel flight was commissioned by Dr. Peter Bloser from UNH for the purpose of flying a prototype scintillator that is being developed for use on spacecraft. The results from that part of mission are still being processed by the group from Londonderry High School.  The CBNA team did an outstanding job on the flight line. The camera bay design, release mechanism, and flight vehicle were CBNA’s primary responsibility. This flight resulted in some of the highest quality images of the edge of space obtained yet by a CBNA mission. Congratulations to all of these talented student scientists.

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy FBLA Chapter members attend Fall Leadership workshop at SNHU

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) connected with other FBLA chapters in NH, at the 44th Annual Fall Leadership Workshop, an all-day event, hosted by Southern New Hampshire University on October 22, 2015.

Students attended a presentation on FBLA Leadership, as well as a presentation by Kent Julian, President of LiveitFoward.com who encouraged the students there to take 100 percent ownership of their lives. Students also participated in team building activities and a workshop with Robin Organ who started an organization called Project Green Schools, a group that encourages schools to “go green” and help to make the Earth a better place to live.

CBNA Students Earning College Credits

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy has established a partnership with Southern New Hampshire University through SNHU in the High School, a dual enrollment program allowing high school students to have the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school. Designated courses at CBNA have been aligned to meet the same content, rigor and learning outcomes as that of the University. The courses are taught by our high school teachers who have met SNHU adjunct faculty requirements and have been approved by the University. Presently, CBNA has four teachers, Walter Damon, Amy Usinger, Mark Struthers and David Zink-Mailloux, who are offering Calculus, Public Speaking, Creative Writing, Anatomy and Physiology, and Environmental Science through this program. More teachers and courses are in the approval process.

In addition, Dr. JoAnn Zylak has completed the BizInnovator Teacher Certification and is now able to offer juniors and seniors college credit for Entrepreneurship through the University of Iowa. BizInnovator is a comprehensive online entrepreneurship curriculum that enables educators to teach the entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and problem solving in preparing students for success in their chosen career paths.

CBNA is also in the process of allowing students to earn dual credit for classes through Great Bay Community College.

The advantage for students participating in these classes is that they are able to earn early college credit at a savings of more than 90% off regular college tuition. They also experience the academic requirements of university level courses, and establish official college transcripts that can be recognized and accepted by many other colleges and universities.

 

CBNA FCCLA Chapter to Host Parent’s Night Out

Attention all busy parents needing to get some Christmas shopping done! Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) chapter will be hosting a “Parent’s Night Out”, on December 12,, 2015 from 4-7 pm at Cowabunga’s Indoor Playground in Hooksett, NH. The members of FCCLA are qualified for childcare, and are planning fun activities for all the children. The cost is $10 which includes a $2 donation going towards the FCCLA Chapter.
