CBNA FFA Students Compete in Events at the Deerfield Fair

The CBNA FFA Much-To-Do Chapter Forestry and Tractor Driving Teams competed at Deerfield Fair in the Forestry and Safe Tractor Driving Events on Friday, September 30, 2016 in the Annual Competitions against other FFA Chapters across the state.  The Tractor Driving teams did very well with the team of Hunter Tetu and Calen Rollins winning a blue ribbon for safe tractor driving and the team of Brenda Hayes and Paul Bane placing fifth in the same event. The event involved driving tractors through a course, using an excavator to dig and fill in a hole, tractor parts identification, and trouble shooting. In Forestry students competed in Log rolling, Cross Cutting, Bow Sawing, Tree Identification, Wood Split and Pulp Toss, with many students winning individual awards. The team of Ryan Graeme, Sam Whitehouse, Jacob McHugh, Wayne Libby, Devon Sullivan, Nick Jensen took home second place overall in Forestry events. Forestry Coaches are Vin and Nick Porcella and Much to Do Chapter advisors are Sarah Ward and Charles Whitten.

 

 

CBNA Theatre Students to Present Alice in Wonderland October 27, 28, 29

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Theatre will proudly present Alice in Wonderland, an adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic, by Eva LeGallienne and Florida Freibus with music by Richard Addinsell, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday October 27, 28 & 29, 2016 in the Gerrish Gym on the CBNA campus.  This production, which also includes text from Through the Looking Glass, stays true to the text of the novels, but occurs in a Wonderland that has an industrial, Victorian “steam punk” feel to it.  Junior Allison Rose, in the role of Alice, leads the cast of 41 students. Other students appearing are seniors Cassandra Barnhart, Nora Canepa, Teagan Folland, Marissa Gast, Joseph Guptill, and Arianna Jones; juniors Sandra Black, Erin Boodey, Zachary Helm, Nina Laramee, Jacob Lock, Shemrey Lussier, Alexander Mercedes, Kayla Pollak, Alyssa Reiff, Julia Sommer, Courtney Snow, and Casey Szmyt; sophomores Braelin Ash, Shayla Ashley, Mackenzie Flanders, Cassuarina French, Ian Gollihur, Cooper Leduke, Lily Marston, Paige Marston, Logan Morton, Cody Peck, Olivia Roach, Madison Rollins, and Emma Tobbe; and freshmen Patrick Helm, Mirah Johnston, Connor Nowak, Abbi Pelletier, Caitlin Reynolds, Rylee Rogers, Lauren Rose, Sophia Sabina, and Ethan Wisminiti. Orchestra members include Lauren Burrows, Gwyn Norris and AJ Trembley. The production stage manager is senior Kayla Cates who will be leading an experienced production team of skilled theatre technicians who will bring Wonderland to life. The production is directed by faculty member Elizabeth Lent with assistance from faculty member Kolby Hume. Music direction is by David Deardorff. Ten Artworks From the Class of 2016 Added to CBNA Permanent Art Collection

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Art Department is pleased to announce that ten members of the CBNA Class of 2016 have had their artworks added to the CBNA Permanent Art Collection.  Each year, senior students who have completed a prescribed course of visual arts study are invited to donate one piece of their two-dimensional artworks to the school’s collection.  The works by CBNA members of the Class of 2016 were displayed as a group exhibition during the summer at Barrington Family Practice and Walk-in Care and have returned to CBNA and will soon be on display in the upper foyer area in Pinkham Hall for 2016-2017 school year.  During the summer exhibit in Barrington, a special opportunity allowed patrons of the Family Practice to cast their votes for their favorite pieces.  Tammy Whitehouse, Office Manager, announced that Billie Pingree’s graphite and pen & ink drawing – Overwhelmed is the recipient of a $100 Visa gift card for receiving the most “People’s Choice” votes during the June to September exhibit.   Artists whose works have been donated include: Megan Elwell – the Lin Landscape – Gouache on Illustration Board; Arianna Gunderson – Wading for You – Acrylic on Canvas Board; Julia Harcourt – Xibalba – Digital B & W Photograph; Lily Hunt – Lush – Reverse Acrylic Painting on Glass; Samuel Koskela – Penni – Graphite on Paper; Ryu Kondrup – Disintegrating Island with Melting Red Tricycle – Acrylic on Canvas Board;  Hanna Marie – Emily the Flower Girl – Digital; Katherine Martel – Stairway of Mystery – Digital Photographs; Billie Pingree – Overwhelmed – Mixed Media – 20” x 16”; Julie Souryavong – Paper Adventures: A Self-Portrait – Digital Photographs.

Since the CBNA Permanent Art Collection started with the class of 1987, 288 pieces have been installed and are part of the school’s collection.  Congratulations recent graduates!

 

CBNA Seniors Named Semifinalists in 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced that Coe-Brown Northwood Academy seniors Davio Deluca of Nottingham and Caroline Lavoie of Barrington have been named as Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Mr. DeLuca and Miss Lavoie join approximately 16,000 other Semifinalists nationwide in this 62nd annual Merit Scholarship Program. These two seniors, along with other academically talented students, have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.  To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements including submitting a detailed application and essay to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.  About 90% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.  Congratulations to Davio and Caroline on this achievement. CBNA Students Commended in 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program

Headmaster David Smith of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy announced today that seniors Emilia Cronshaw of Strafford, Joshua Hall of Barrington and Zackary Pine of Strafford, have been named commended students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.  A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the headmaster to these scholastically talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2016 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.  “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

 

CBNA 2016 Graduate Places Second in Regional FFA Competition

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy 2016 graduate Sydney Wilson recently received second place in the FFA Extemporaneous Speaking Career Development Event at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield. MA.  In the Extemporaneous Public Speaking CDE, participants are given 30 minutes to deliver a speech on one of three assigned agricultural topics. Students must learn to think on their feet and develop an argument quickly and persuasively. Miss Wilson, a Nottingham resident, who is currently attending NHTI, spoke about the Impact of Urban Agriculture. She also won the state competition in the spring at the NH FFA Convention, and will be representing NH at the National FFA Convention in October.  Also attending the Big E from CBNA was the Horse Evaluation team of Preston Bethke, Molly DeTrude, Ryan Graeme, and Emery Travers, who also will be representing New Hampshire at the national level in October. The CBNA FFA chapter is advised by Sarah Ward and Charles Whitten.
