CBNA Chapter of NHS Inducts New Members

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy 2018-2019 National  Honor Society.

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) recently inducted 25 new members to this prestigious national organization. In order to obtain membership into NHS, students must first have a cumulative GPA of 90 or above. Students who meet this rigorous scholarship requirement then have an opportunity to complete an application detailing their accomplishments in and commitment to service, leadership, and character.  Once the application process is complete, students’ applications are reviewed by a panel consisting of administration and faculty members and then student scholars are invited to become members based on the panel’s recommendations. The 2018 Induction Ceremony was led by NHS President senior Jacob Rich and Officers seniors Emma Tobbe, Kelsey Pine and Sydney Neuman.  Faculty member Mr. Gary Colby provided remarks as the guest speaker for the event and advisor Mr. David Daigle presented awards. New members include seniors Maggie Eaton, Olivia Farrar, Kirsten Gunderson, Benjamin Healy, Delaney Jean and Jackson Noel, and juniors Lauren Best, Codi Boheen, Jaden Boulanger, Benjamin Brieger, Shane Cameron, Riley Colby, Addison Craven, Lauren Curtin, Celia Fogarty, Mirah Johnston, Madison Kriete, Evan Lentz, Elizabeth Libby, Katherine Messenger, Ryan Nester, Madison Tortorella- Lewis, Kathleen Roach, Mary Thoms, and Alexandra Wheeler. These inductees join the other NHS members seniors Elijah Allen, Shayla Ashley, Shealyn Bedell, Susan Burnap, Madison Cunningham, Alice Ewing, Ian Gollihur, Alex Gomez, Colby Hoffman, Alyssa Hubbard, Albert Lapiejko, Lillian Marie, Paige Marston, Shane Marston, Bailey Travers, and Megan Wimsatt. Congratulations to all of the members for their scholarship, leadership, service and character.

 

CBNA Sophomores Selected in VFW Voice of Democracy Contest

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy proudly announces the local winners of the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest sponsored by the VFW.  Coordinated through Mr. Daniel Barnhart of the Northwood VFW Post 7217, sophomore students in Mrs. Biery’s English classes submitted their audio and written essays based on this year’s topic “Why My Vote Matters”.   At a recent school assembly, Mr. Barnhart presented first place winner Sarah Marsh with a prize of $100 and announced that her entry will be submitted to the next level of competition.  Second and third place winners Mary Katherine Pattteson and Jennifer Bettencourt also received monetary prizes.  Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme.

 

 

CBNA Among the Top Ten High Schools in NH

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recently announced that Coe-Brown senior Alice Ewing has been named a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Miss Ewing joins approximately 16,000 other Semifinalists nationwide in this annual program who were the highest scoring students in their states on the 2017 PSAT which served as an initial screen of program entrants.  Miss Ewing along with these other academically talented students, has an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.  To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements including submitting a detailed application and essay to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.  About 90% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.  Congratulations to Alice Ewing on this achievement.

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy High School Information Nights

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy will be holding Information Nights for parents who are interested in learning more about the school. Although these nights are focused on Strafford, Northwood, Nottingham, and Barrington anyone is welcome to attend either night. This is an opportunity to learn more about the curriculum and what programs are available at Coe-Brown as parents make their decisions about where to send their children to high school. The night will include an information session presented by the Administration and Guidance, opportunity to ask questions, as well as a tour of the campus. The Northwood/Strafford Night will be Thursday, November 1 at 6:30 and the Nottingham/Barrington Night will be Thursday, November 8 at 6:30 in the Gerrish Gym (main building).

CBNA Forensics Students Remotely Access Electron Microscope

Recently, Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Forensics students had the opportunity to remotely access a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) courtesy of the University of New Hampshire’s Instrumentation Center through the collaboration of science faculty member Mrs. Tiffany Thompson and Mrs. Nancy Cherim, an Analytical Instrumentation Scientist at UNH. Forensic students and science faculty members had the opportunity to submit forensic samples to be analyzed. Through a video conference call with Mrs. Cherim, students were able to examine and measure the size of many different samples such as dog hairs, human hair, and other plant and animal specimens. From this opportunity, students were able to experience what is like to be a forensic scientist in the real world and see the difficulty in matching hair evidence to a single person or animal.

 

CBNA Theatre Students to Present Love’s Labor’s Lost October 25, 26, 27, 2018

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Theatre will proudly present William Shakespeare’s romantic romp, Love’s Labor’s Lost, Thursday, Friday and Saturday October 25, 26 & 27, 2018, at 7 PM, in the Gerrish Gym on the CBNA campus.  One of Shakespeare’s early comedies, this adaptation is set in Navarre High School, circa 1999. The story concerns four students, led by Ferdinand, who swear oaths of no fun, no food and no females in order to focus on their studies, and ask a bunch of other students to do the same. However, when four young ladies led by the Princess of France, come for a visit, they (of course) break those oaths by falling in love, writing poetry and disguising themselves as Russians (What???).  Witty wordplay, misdirected love notes, tricks, the prom and the course of true love ensue.  The cast includes seniors Braelin Ash, Shayla Ashley, Brian Downer, Mackenzie Flanders, Cooper Leduke, Lily Marston, Paige Marston, Olivia Roach; juniors Emily Dallaire, Patrick Helm, Brianna Jackson, Shannon Jackson, Mirah Johnston, Connor Nowak, Caitlin Reynolds, Rylee Rogers, Lauren Rose, Eva Turcotte; sophomores Mary Katherine Patteson, Ben Poirier, Clayton Price, Aiden Schutte, Darin Sweet, Jordan Trahant and freshmen Sabrinalin Jeffers, Mairead O’Shea, Calvin Swett and Caleb Yates. Production stage manager junior Madison Bowen will be leading an experienced production team of skilled theatre technicians who will bring Love’s Labor’s Lost to life. The production is directed by faculty member Elizabeth Lent with assistance and choreography from faculty member Kolby Hume. CBNA to Hold Annual Homecoming September 14 & 15

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is pleased to announce that our Annual Homecoming will be celebrated on Friday & Saturday, September 14 & 15, 2018.  The weekend will kick off with “Red and White” day for students on Friday, followed by the family friendly Comedy Hypnosis Show Steve Wronker’s Funny Business at 7 pm ($10) in the Gerrish Gym.  A full day of fantastic family activities is planned across the campus for Saturday the 15th including athletic events: Bass Fishing at 8 am, Cross Country vs. Portsmouth and Bow at 9 am, Girls JV/V Soccer vs. Oyster River at noon, Boys JV/V Soccer vs. Plymouth at 2 pm and Girls R/JV/V Volleyball vs. St. Thomas at 2:30, 3:45, and 5. To get the day started there will be a pancake breakfast hosted by the CBNA Chapter of FCCLA  from 8-10 am in the Smith Hall Lobby. Pre-sale tickets are $8 per person or $25 for a family of 4 or more, or $10 per person or $30 for a family of 4 or more at the door. Contact Mrs. Morales for more info at amorales@coebrown.org.
