Spring Musical Production of “Once Upon a Mattress”

Northwood, New Hampshire… The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy theatre company is thrilled to invite the community to its upcoming spring musical production of Once Upon a Mattress. This hilarious spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea will take the stage for three performances on March 6 and 7, 2026.

About the Show

Many moons ago in a far-off place, Queen Aggravain decreed that no couples could marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, found a bride. While princesses have travelled from far and wide, none have been able to pass the Queen’s impossible tests—until the “shy” swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, makes her grand entrance.

Audiences will follow Winnifred’s raucous and romantic journey to see if she can pass the Sensitivity Test, win the Prince’s hand, and finally allow the rest of the kingdom—including Lady Larken and Sir Harry—to head to the altar. Featuring music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and a book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer, this production is a “rollicking” experience filled with side-splitting shenanigans.

The production highlights the collaborative spirit of the CBNA faculty and student body:

• Director: Jennie Moynihan (Director of Theatre and English Faculty)
• Music Direction: Erin Davis (Fine Arts Department)
• Choreography: Kolby Hume (Social Studies Department)

“Our students have worked incredibly hard creating this beautiful land on stage,” says Director Jennie Moynihan. “It is a joy to watch them bring these vibrant characters to life through such melodic and hilarious storytelling.”” “The music is challenging in this particular piece, and the students, with Mrs. Davis’ guidance, have really risen to the challenge of making the show sound really outstanding.”

We are lucky to have such dedicated and hardworking students who partake in every aspect of the production, from painting our castle walls to designing the light cues.” Moynihan continues, “We take the term ‘educational theatre’ to heart, and truly invest the time to make sure our students have a well-rounded theatre education.” “This may be one of the most stunning sets that we have put together, most of it being student-created.”
