Dual Enrollment at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy!

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is fortunate to have the capability to provide its students with the opportunity to enroll in dual enrollment classes. These classes offer a unique advantage by allowing students to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously. This not only enhances their academic experience, but also gives them a head start in their higher education journey, potentially saving time and money in the future.

The Development Staff recently had the chance to speak with a recent CBNA graduate about how participating in dual enrollment has positively impacted their educational journey! They could not have spoken more highly of this program.

“Hello Coe-Brown! My name is Trey, and I am a graduate from the class of 2023. IT’ve since gone on to attend UNH as a Physics major, and I wanted to share some of the ways the dual enrollment opportunities offered by Coe-Brown have helped pave the way for a successful college career!

During my time at CBNA, I took a number of dual enrollment classes in topics such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Creative Writing, Public Speaking, and Calculus. These classes were among the best I took at Coe-Brown, and for a moderate fee I was able to receive college credits for the completion of each of these classes. While these classes are only worth 3 or 4 credits each, they add up quickly, and I was able to enter college with a total of 29 credits from SNHU. That amounts to almost an entire year of study, and by taking a wide range of dual enrollment and Advanced Placement classes at Coe-Brown I was able to satisfy all of my elective requirements before walking through the doors of UNH, which gave me the freedom in my schedule to study the things I really wanted to learn about.

I would highly recommend taking as many dual enrollment classes as you can at Coe-Brown. They tend to be less intensive than AP classes, yet provide many of the same benefits, including college credits and course exemptions. On top of that, they are a lot of fun!

Creative Writing and Public Speaking are especially engaging and accessible, and allowed me to skip my English and Communication electives at UNH, so I would highly recommend taking them! Furthermore, while some of you may be dissuaded by the cost of dual enrollment classes, I would consider taking them to be a great investment. I encourage those of you planning to attend college to compare the cost of 4 credits at your target schools to the cost of earning those credits through a dual enrollment class. It really is no competition; while the upfront cost of a dual enrollment class may seem steep, it is a very small fraction of what you would pay at any university.

In short, dual enrollment classes at Coe-Brown offer a fun and accessible opportunity for students to get an affordable head-start on their college education, and I cannot recommend them enough. They helped pave the way for my college education, and they could easily help pave the way to yours!”

SNHU:

Coe-Brown partners with Southern New Hampshire University to offer SNHU in the High School’s dual enrollment program, which allows high school students the opportunity to earn early college credits while in high school. Designated courses have been aligned to meet the same content, rigor and learning outcomes as that of the University.

The courses are taught during the regular school day by our high school teachers who have met the University’s adjunct faculty requirements and have been approved by the University. The program allows eligible high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, to take SNHU courses to earn credit simultaneously toward both a high school diploma and a college degree. At the beginning of the course students complete an application and 12 submit the course registration fee for each college credit. Upon successful completion of the course, students will have an official SNHU college transcript to use in transferring credits to other colleges and universities. Please note that each college and university has its own policy on accepting transfer credits.

Participation advantages:

  • Reduced costs: SNHU in the High School courses require only a $100 fee per 3-credit course, a savings of more than 90 percent off regular full-time SNHU
  • Students experience the academic requirements of a university-level course and are better prepared for college by gaining exposure to college expectations and
  • High school students applying to college having already earned university credits demonstrates to admission offices that they can meet the academic demands of university-level course
  • Credits are generally transferable to other colleges and universities (policies vary by school).
  • Credits and grades are earned and recorded on an official SNHU transcript at the conclusion of the course(s).

  • Probability and Statistics – 3 credits
  • Digital Photography – 3 credits
  • French III CP-6 credits
  • French III Honors-6 credits
  • Spanish III CP-6 credits
  • Spanis III Honors-6 credits
  • Spanish IV CP-6 credits

Early College:

The Early College program enables students to take community college courses for dual high school AND college credit. Courses offered through Early College are college courses taught at high school by teachers who have college-level teaching credentials and use a college syllabus and course materials. These courses offer a huge savings ($150) from the regular cost of college tuition and allow students to get a head start on their college degree and career skills.

  • Criminal Justice – 3 credits (Great Bay Community College)
  • Meteorology – 4 credits (New Hampshire Technical Institute)
  • Marketing -3 credits (Great Bay Community College)
  • Exercise Science- 4 credits (Manchester Community College)

Other Courses Include:

  • Entrepreneurship – 3 credits through University of Iowa

Discuss this option with your school counselor to determine how dual enrollment courses can meet your future needs. There typically needs to be a minimum of six students per class enrolled in the dual credit option to offer the course for college credit.
