Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is committed to providing all pupils a safe and secure school environment. Coe-Brown’s bullying policy can be read in its entirety on the CBNA website. The following is a summary of that policy.

Bullying is defined as a single significant incident or a pattern of incidents involving a written, verbal or electronic communication or a physical act or gesture, or any combination thereof, directed at another pupil which physically harms a pupil or damages a pupil’ property, causes emotional distress, interferes with a pupil’s educational opportunities, or substantially disrupts the orderly operation of the school. This can include an incident that happens on school property, as at school-sponsored event or off school property if the conduct interferes with a pupil’s educational opportunities or substantially disrupts the orderly operation of the school or school-sponsored event.

The school reserves the right to impose disciplinary measures against any student who commits an act of bullying, falsely accuses another student of bullying, or who retaliates against any student or witness who provides information about an act of bullying.

Bullying is an epidemic that requires the efforts of the school, students, and parents to deal with. What can we all do to help fight this epidemic?

Parents: Encourage your child to report bullying and cyberbullying when it occurs, talk to your children about bullying, report to the school if you think your child is being bullied or is bullying other students, and cooperate with school personnel in identifying and resolving incidents.
Students: Do not engage in bullying or cyberbullying, report to the school if you are being bullied or witness bullying, and work to resolve conflicts in a healthy constructive way.

School: Upon receiving a bullying report the school will:

  1. Notify the parents of the reported victim and the reported perpetrator of the bullying within 48 hours of receiving the report.
  2. Initiate an investigation within 5 school days which includes interviews with the alleged victim, alleged perpetrator and any witnesses.
  3. Complete the investigation and initial filing of incidents within 10 days unless granted an extension by the Board of Trustees. All substantiated reports will be filed with the Headmaster.
  4. Determination will then be made if there has been a violation of the bullying policy and disciplinary action and remedial measures will be taken as appropriate. Depending on the situation, consequences may involve admonishment, removal from class, deprivation of privileges, detention, suspension, or expulsion. Remedial measures may include restitution, mediation, peer group support, corrective instruction, behavioral assessment, counseling, or parent conferences.
  5. Within two school of completing an investigation, the school will notify the students and parents of the findings and result of the investigation. In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the school will not disclose the discipline and remedial action assigned to those students involved in the bullying incident.

Appeal Process: There is an appeal process delineated in the full policy that can be initiated in writing within five school days of notification of the results of the investigation.
